Memoirs of an Accidental Abolitionist

A White Social Worker’s Journey Through the Heart of America’s Racial Divide.

About Us

Meet Sharon Marie Chester, MSW, LCSW

Despite having worked 30 years as a professional Social Worker, when 2005 brought the devastation of Hurricane Katrina, Sharon Marie Chester, MSW, LSCW, suddenly found herself fully immersed in the true racist underbelly of this country. Equally shocking was the cost of advocacy, which included the loss of friends, family, jobs, living spaces and a trip to the Supreme Court over a 20-year span.

Since those tumultuous early days, Ms. Chester has dedicated her life to dismantling racism at the personal, professional and societal levels according to the mission and guidelines of her Social Work profession. This book offers both the academic foundation for action and a testament to the twists and turns of boots on the ground advocacy.

Ms. Chester is currently in private practice in St. Bernard Parish, Louisiana, where she continues to challenge others to commit to ongoing racial literacy and to engage in the anti-oppressive lifestyle upon which her noble industry was founded.

A Story of Resistance, Reckoning, and Redemption

Memoirs of an Accidental Abolitionist is a gripping and unapologetic reflection on what happens when one woman dares to confront racism head-on—not in theory, but in lived, everyday experience. Sharon Marie Chester, a white social worker caught in the storm of Hurricane Katrina, didn’t set out to become an abolitionist. But in the face of institutional racism, retaliation, and injustice, she made a choice—to stand up, speak out, and refuse to be silent.

Part memoir, part manual, and part manifesto, this book charts the emotional, political, and professional cost of being a white ally in spaces not built for accountability. Through hard-won lessons, Sharon unpacks the systems that enable oppression and offers tools to dismantle them.
